| Effective communication is paramount to one's success
in this world. Since 1982, Greater Atlanta Speech and Language Clinics,
Inc. (GASLC) have enhanced the lives of individuals in Metropolitan
Atlanta by offering comprehensive therapeutic programs in speech-language
pathology. Services were expanded to include occupational therapy in 2000,
and physical therapy was added in 2004.
Founding
Director Joan Aronson, M.Ed., CCC, initiated the practice in 1982.
Ms. Aronson earned bachelor's and master's degrees in speech-language
pathology at the University of Miami in Florida, where she was awarded
a graduate fellowship at the Mailman Center for Child Development. During
her early years, she served on cleft palate and high-risk infant teams
at the Children's Hospital of Orange County, California, and as head of
program development for five rehabilitation clinics in Georgia. She served
on the Gwinnett Early Childhood Interagency Council (www.ph.dhr.state.ga.us/programs/bcw/index.shtml)
for over ten years, and her special expertise in myofunctional therapy
has led to her frequent workshop presentations on this subject.
Ms. Aronson earned additional accreditations in the field
of hippotherapy from 2000 to 2002, which led her to found two locations
of Horse Talk NARHA Centers, as a division of GASLC, in 2001.
Mindy
Elkan, M.A., CCC, joined GASLC as a speech-language pathologist in
1990, became the Assistant Director in 1991 and the Clinical Director
in 2001. Ms. Elkan earned a bachelor's degree in early childhood/elementary
education at Oswego State University in New York, and a master's degree
in speech-language pathology at New York's Hofstra University. Active
in the field since 1978, Ms. Elkan served on the Board of Cooperative
Educational Services in New York with the Autistic and Communication Disorders
Program. In addition, she directed her own private practice in New York,
including services for a nine-office neurology team. Ms. Elkan has served
on the Cobb/Douglas Early Childhood Interagency Council since 1991, and
is a past chairperson. She is a member of the Autism Society of America
(ASA) and received ASA's 1998 Award for Supporting Professional. Ms. Elkan
is also a member of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association
and the National Down Syndrome Society (www.ndss.org).
In August 2004, Ms. Elkan participated with Connecting with Kids Network
as the expert for stuttering (www.greatbyeight.com).
She supervises GASLC's Speech Aerobics program that she co-created
with a physical trainer as well as other innovative programs offered at
GASLC. Ms. Elkan is a certified Humorica therapist which is now
being offered at GASLC.
